
When people talk about the future of social media, decentralisation often comes up as the solution to many platform problems.
The argument sounds appealing.
No central authority.
No single company controlling speech.
No platform deciding what stays online and what gets removed.
In theory, decentralised platforms promise more freedom.
But from the perspective of someone working in Trust & Safety, they also raise a difficult question:
If no one is responsible for moderation, what happens when things go wrong?
The Appeal of Decentralisation
Centralised platforms have always faced criticism for their moderation decisions. Users complain about censorship, inconsistent enforcement, or unclear rules.
Decentralised platforms try to solve this by distributing control. Instead of one company making decisions, moderation can happen at different levels. Communities create their own rules. Servers or nodes decide what they allow.
On paper, this sounds more democratic.
Different communities can set their own boundaries instead of relying on one global policy.
But moderation doesn’t disappear in this model. It just becomes fragmented.
The Moderation Vacuum
In practice, decentralisation can create gaps in responsibility.
If harmful content appears on a traditional platform, there is usually a company accountable for removing it. There are reporting tools, policy teams, and enforcement processes.
In a decentralised network, the question becomes less clear.
Who investigates abuse?
Who removes illegal content?
Who responds to victims?
Sometimes the answer is individual server operators. Sometimes it’s volunteer moderators. Sometimes it’s no one.
And when harmful content spreads across multiple nodes, enforcement becomes even harder.
The Scale Problem Returns
The internet moves fast. Harmful content can spread across communities in minutes.
Moderation systems need coordination to respond effectively. Trust & Safety teams rely on escalation paths, shared policies, and internal tools designed for scale.
Decentralised systems often lack that structure.
Without coordinated oversight, harmful content can persist longer simply because no one has the authority or resources to address it quickly.
The problem isn’t that moderation becomes impossible.
It’s that it becomes uneven.
Freedom and Safety Are Not Opposites
Supporters of decentralised platforms often frame moderation as censorship. But the reality inside Trust & Safety is more complicated.
Moderation is not just about restricting speech.
It’s about stopping harassment campaigns.
Preventing exploitation.
Protecting minors.
Reducing coordinated abuse.
These problems don’t disappear just because a platform is decentralised.
In fact, they can become harder to manage.
Freedom of expression works best when people feel safe participating. Without basic safeguards, many voices simply leave.
The Real Challenge Ahead
Decentralised platforms are an important experiment in the evolution of the internet.
They challenge the idea that a few companies should control global communication.
But they also expose a difficult truth.
Moderation is not optional infrastructure. It’s necessary infrastructure.
The question isn’t whether decentralised platforms can avoid moderation.
It’s whether they can build new models of moderation that are transparent, accountable, and scalable without relying on a single authority.
From what I’ve seen working in Trust & Safety, the future of online platforms will always involve some form of moderation.
The real challenge is deciding who holds that responsibility.
