When I first started working in Trust & Safety, the function sat far from the boardroom.

Moderation teams focused on enforcement. Policy teams wrote guidelines. Risk teams handled escalations. Most of the work happened deep inside operations.

But the internet has changed. And so has the importance of Trust & Safety.

Today, the question many people inside the industry are asking is this:

Will Trust & Safety eventually become a board-level responsibility?

From what I’m seeing across the industry, that shift may already be happening.

Trust Is Now a Strategic Risk

For a long time, companies treated online harm as a product issue. If something went wrong, it was handled by operations or compliance teams.

But modern platforms operate at enormous scale. When moderation fails, the consequences are no longer limited to bad user experiences.

They can affect elections, public safety, and global reputation.

Corporate governance experts increasingly describe “trust” itself as a strategic risk that leadership must manage. In today’s digital environment, protecting user trust affects credibility, regulatory exposure, and long-term business resilience.

In other words, Trust & Safety is no longer just about moderation.

It’s about protecting the legitimacy of the platform itself.

And that’s something boards care about.

The Regulatory Pressure Is Growing

Another reason Trust & Safety is moving upward in organizations is regulation.

Laws such as the European Union’s Digital Services Act and the UK’s Online Safety Act require platforms to prove they can manage systemic risks like disinformation, child exploitation, and coordinated abuse.

These are not operational details.

They are governance issues.

Boards increasingly have to answer questions like:

  • Are we properly managing platform risk?
  • Are our algorithms amplifying harmful content?
  • Are we protecting minors online?
  • Do we have accountability systems for moderation decisions?

Those questions cannot be answered by moderation teams alone.

They require leadership oversight.

A Current Scenario: Elections and Platform Risk

A good example of this shift is how companies prepare for elections.

In recent years, platforms have had to build large Trust & Safety programs focused on election integrity. These programs monitor misinformation, coordinated manipulation, and foreign influence campaigns.

Researchers studying Trust & Safety say the field now plays a governance role inside technology companies by helping manage risks like disinformation, extremism, and online harassment.

When misinformation spreads during a national election, the issue is not just technical.

It becomes political, regulatory, and reputational.

At that point, the problem reaches the boardroom whether companies planned for it or not.

Trust & Safety Is Expanding Beyond Moderation

Another reason Trust & Safety may become a board-level function is that the field itself is expanding.

Ten years ago, moderation mainly meant removing violating content.

Today it includes:

  • AI safety and algorithm oversight
  • Child safety protections
  • Election integrity programs
  • Platform abuse prevention
  • Digital risk management
  • Regulatory compliance

In many companies, these issues intersect with legal teams, product development, cybersecurity, and corporate governance.

As digital platforms become more influential, the risks they create become strategic business risks.

And strategic risks eventually reach the board.

What the Future Might Look Like

If this trend continues, we may start seeing new structures inside large technology companies.

Possibilities include:

  • Chief Trust & Safety Officers reporting directly to executives
  • Board-level risk committees reviewing platform safety metrics
  • Independent oversight for AI moderation systems
  • Trust and safety metrics appearing in quarterly governance reports

In other industries, cybersecurity followed a similar path.

Twenty years ago it was an IT issue. Today it’s a boardroom issue.

Trust & Safety may be heading down the same road.

Final Thoughts

From inside the industry, the change already feels visible.

Moderation used to be about removing harmful posts.

Now it’s about managing digital ecosystems that influence billions of people.

When a function starts shaping public discourse, political stability, and user trust at global scale, it doesn’t stay operational forever.

Eventually, it becomes governance.

And governance always ends up in the boardroom.
