It’s Never Just One Conflict
Most people assume Trust & Safety teams deal with one major crisis at a time.
That’s rarely the case.
I remember logging into my dashboard during a peak period and seeing multiple conflict-related queues active at once. Different regions. Different languages. Different political contexts.
But all demanding attention at the same time.
One queue had videos of active strikes. Another had posts about supply shortages. A third was filled with historical footage being reshared as current events.
At that moment, it wasn’t just about moderation.
It was about prioritization.

The First Challenge: What Gets Attention First?
When everything feels urgent, deciding what to act on first becomes a challenge in itself.
I’ve had moments where two pieces of content sat side by side.
One showed graphic footage from an active conflict.
The other was a fast-spreading rumor about fuel shortages that could trigger real-world panic.
Both mattered. But in different ways.
This is where ethics meets scale.
Do you prioritize immediate harm or potential harm? Do you act on what’s visible or what might escalate?
There’s no perfect answer.
Context Doesn’t Scale Easily
Each conflict comes with its own context.
Cultural sensitivities. Local history. Political narratives. Language nuances.
I’ve seen how the same phrase can mean very different things depending on the region. A symbol that’s harmless in one place can be deeply sensitive in another.
Now multiply that by dozens of conflicts happening at once.
From a systems perspective, it’s hard to scale that level of understanding.
AI can help with detection, but context often requires human judgment.
And human judgment doesn’t scale infinitely.
The Language Barrier Is Real
During one shift, I reviewed content across multiple languages within the same hour.
Some posts were translated automatically. Others weren’t.
In a few cases, the translation missed key nuances. A phrase that looked neutral in English carried strong implications in its original language.
That gap can change how content is interpreted.
And in conflict situations, small misinterpretations can lead to bigger consequences.
Consistency vs. Sensitivity
One of the biggest tensions in Trust & Safety is between consistency and sensitivity.
Policies are designed to be consistent.
But conflicts are not.
I’ve seen situations where applying the same rule across different regions felt technically correct, but contextually incomplete.
For example, content documenting violence may be allowed in one context for awareness, but similar content elsewhere may be restricted due to potential harm.
Balancing this is not straightforward.
Because users expect fairness, but fairness doesn’t always look the same everywhere.
The Speed Problem Multiplies
Handling one fast-moving crisis is difficult.
Handling many at once amplifies the challenge.
Each conflict generates its own wave of content. Real-time updates, opinions, misinformation, reactions.
I’ve experienced moments where just keeping up with volume felt like a race.
And while we’re focused on one region, another starts trending.
The system doesn’t pause.
When Ethics Meets Pressure
There’s also pressure that isn’t always visible.
Public scrutiny. Internal expectations. The responsibility of making decisions that could impact how information spreads during sensitive moments.
I’ve felt that weight while reviewing borderline content.
Not clearly harmful. Not clearly safe.
But potentially influential.
In those moments, decisions are not just about policy.
They’re about impact.
The Role of AI and Its Limits
AI helps scale moderation.
It can detect patterns, flag content, and reduce workload.
But it has limits.
I’ve seen AI systems struggle with regional context, sarcasm, evolving narratives, and emerging events.
During conflicts, these gaps become more visible.
Because what matters most is not just what is being said, but what it means in that specific moment.
The Invisible Work Behind the Scenes
From the outside, moderation often looks like a simple action. Remove or allow.
From the inside, it’s layered.
Reviewing context. Understanding intent. Considering impact. Balancing policy with real-world consequences.
And doing all of this across multiple conflicts, simultaneously.
It’s not just operational.
It’s ethical.
Final Thought: Scaling More Than Systems
Trust & Safety at this scale isn’t just about handling more content.
It’s about scaling judgment.
Scaling awareness.
Scaling responsibility.
Scaling ethics.
From what I’ve experienced, technology can support this, but it can’t replace it.
Because conflicts are human.
And moderating them requires more than systems.
It requires understanding.
And that’s the hardest thing to scale.
